UFC vet Frankie Edgar has a promising start in standup comedy ahead of retirement bout

UFC vet Frankie Edgar demonstrated his stand-up skills without ever throwing a single punch, kick, knee, or elbow. The former UFC lightweight champion Edgar released a clip of his comedic set along with a teaser for the release of UFC Comedy Jam 2 on UFC’s service.

“You know, I have more time in the octagon than anybody in the history of the UFC. I’ve been punched, kicked, and beaten down more than Will Smith has been beaten by Jada. Listen, if punches were d**ks, my face would look like Paige VanZant’s inbox.”

Fans flocked to the comments section to express their opinions on Edgar making his stand up debut ahead of his retirement bout at Madison Square Garden this fall.

He was compared to another UFC veteran who transitioned to stand-up comedy, as seen by this post by Instagram user @andrew h 655:

“Way funnier then Brendan Schaub….tho that is not saying much.”

Many people admired Frankie Edgar’s strategy, as seen by this statement from Instagram user @johnny pynetrees:

“Bruh you’re not holding back at all”

When Instagram user @ bigbrothathunda wrote: “Lmfaoooooo my boy frankie gettin that funny money NOW!! Congrats my guy”

Edgar isn’t the only well-known mixed martial artist doing stand-up comedy on stage. Sara McMann, Andre Fili, and Gerald Harris were among the other acts on the UFC Comedy Jam 2 schedule.

In addition to them and the aforementioned Brendan Schaub, Michael Bisping has a flourishing comedic career.

One of the most well-known mixed martial artists that started doing standup comedy is Brendan Schaub. Schaub’s first television special was titled ‘You’d Be Surprised’. It debuted in May 2019 on Showtime. His follow-up act, The Gringo Papi, was released on YouTube in April of this year. Many speculate that his financial success came as a result of a friendship with Joe Rogan over comedic chops.

Chael Sonnen, Henry Cejudo, Din Thomas and even Dana White all performed jokes on the first UFC Comedy Jam.

Edgar is scheduled to retire at UFC 281. The New York native will be competing one final time on November 12, 2022 on the card confirmed to be headlined by Adesanya and Alex Pereira MIddleweight clash.

Edgar is interested in Dominick Cruz for now but it’s all up in the air depending on the outcome of tonight’s UFC event in which Cruz will take on Marlon Chito Vera – Vera previously created a viral moment with his front kick knock out of Edgar.
