Cain Velasquez’s attorney optimistic bail will be granted

The bail hearing for Cain Velasquez will take place at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice in San Jose, California on Monday.

Velasquez’s defense attorney, Mark Geragos is confident that this time the bail will be granted.

“The bail hearing is scheduled for Monday, and we’re hopeful that he’ll be released on terms and conditions that can satisfy the court that there is no threat, which there clearly is not,” Geragos told MMA Junkie on Thursday.

At an arraignment hearing on March 7, Judge Shelyna Brown called Velasquez’s alleged actions “reckless” and thought that they posed too great a risk to release him on bail. The same judge will oversee Velasquez’s hearing on Monday.

Geragos, on the other hand, disagrees and hopes the judges will reconsider the bail on Monday.

“Based on what I’ve seen of Cain and what I know of Cain, there is no threat,”

Former UFC heavyweight champion was arrested after allegedly shooting at a man charged with abusing an underaged relative. Unfortunately, the bullet hit Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender.

Recently, Velasquez issued a statement on his Instagram account. He thanked people who have supported him and helped his family.

“To everyone that has expressed your support, my family and I will never be able to thank you enough. From the bottom of our hearts and the depths of our souls, we are forever grateful for your love. Your selfless gestures and kind words have given me the strength in my darkest times.”

“This story is complex and slowly unraveling as we speak. To the true victims of this case, may God give you the strength to come forward. Though it is most difficult to relieve the pain that has happened to you, in speaking the truth, justice will be served and your own true healing will start.”

“I will never stop helping or loving my community and all of you. Thank you for loving me – Cain Velasquez”,  the statement reads.

Velasquez faces a number of charges. If found guilty he’s looking at 20 years to life in jail..

Following the news of Velasquez’s arrest and the Goularte case, support has been flowing to the former UFC champion.

For example, UFC middleweight Derek Brunson successfully raised $10,000 for Velasquez’s legal fees. The fund came from the “Free Cain Velasquez” t-shirt he sold on his website.

The #FreeCain supporters were also present in large numbers in both the Velasquez and Goularte hearings.
