Michael Chandler is still trying to materialize a mega payday against Conor McGregor for Jan. 24, 2026

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler has once again demonstrated his strategic approach to keeping his potential blockbuster fight with Conor McGregor in the public eye, this time by proposing a specific date with personal significance.

Chandler recently revealed why he called out the Irish superstar for January 24, 2026, explaining that the date holds special meaning to him and conveniently falls on a weekend.

“January 24th is my wife and I’s anniversary. And it just so happens to be a Saturday,” Chandler explained. “So I was like, that seems like a, let’s throw that out there. Let’s throw that out there that speaking into existence.”

The former Bellator champion appears to be playing the long game, suggesting the timing might align with business developments within the UFC. “January, the turn of the new year, probably a new, some kind of new TV deal that these guys are working on,” he theorized.

The saga between Chandler and McGregor has been ongoing since they coached opposite each other on “The Ultimate Fighter 31.” They were scheduled to face off in June, but the fight never materialized after McGregor withdrew.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding McGregor’s return to competition, Chandler remains a topic of interest in interviews regarding the potential matchup. “I get asked about it in almost every single interview. And rightfully so, the Connor Chandler thing just stays alive,” Chandler noted.

He received encouragement when McGregor recently acknowledged their “unfinished business” on social media, keeping hope alive for the showdown.

However, Chandler maintains a realistic perspective about the situation. “Obviously, I’m not losing sleep at night, trying to get the Conner fight, wanting to get the Conner fight. If me and Connor are supposed to fight and he’s supposed to come back, it’s going to happen, and I don’t need to force it,” he said.

The seasoned competitor even expressed doubt about McGregor’s return to the octagon. “With that being said, if I’m a betting man, I’m not sure if he comes back.”

For now, Chandler plans to focus on his family and business ventures while seeing how the situation unfolds. “All I know is I’m going to enjoy my family over the summertime, work on some big time business that I’ve been working on for the last couple weeks since the fight and see how this whole thing unfolds.”

Whether the January 2026 date materializes or not, Chandler’s strategic callout ensures the conversation around this potential matchup remains relevant in the UFC landscape.
