Imane Khelif BANNED from Olympics after World Boxing introduces sex testing

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has introduced mandatory sex testing for all competitors following a controversial decision to disqualify Algerian boxer Imane Khelif from the 2023 Women’s World Championships.

Khelif, who had been competing in international women’s boxing tournaments for years, was abruptly banned from the competition after reportedly failing gender eligibility tests. The IBA stated that Khelif and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, were disqualified after tests allegedly revealed they had XY chromosomes.

“The IBA will continue to develop women’s boxing in a fair and transparent manner, protecting athletes at all times,” said IBA Secretary General and CEO Chris Roberts in an official statement.

The decision has sparked significant controversy within the sporting world, with many questioning the timing and methodology of the testing. Critics have pointed out that Khelif had previously competed in the Tokyo Olympics without any issues regarding eligibility.

The Algerian Olympic Committee has strongly defended Khelif, asserting that she was born female, has always competed as a woman, and has all the legal documentation to prove her gender identity.

This move by the IBA comes amid ongoing tensions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which stripped the IBA of its Olympic status due to concerns about governance, finances, and ethical issues. The IOC now organizes Olympic boxing tournaments independently.

Sports analysts suggest this development could have far-reaching implications for gender testing in combat sports, potentially affecting numerous athletes’ careers and raising questions about privacy, human rights, and the scientific basis for determining gender in competitive sports.
