UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall and professional boxer Tommy Fury recently faced off in a unique competition to determine who possesses the most formidable striking power. The event, captured for Aspinall’s channel, saw the two British combat sports stars engage in a series of challenges using a high-tech punching machine.
Aspinall, known for his devastating knockouts in the octagon, has been on a tear in the UFC. His last appearance saw him dispatch Curtis Blaydes in a mere 60 seconds at UFC Manchester in July. The heavyweight contender boasts an impressive record, with eight of his nine UFC victories coming within the first round.
On the other side, Tommy Fury, half-brother of heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, has made waves in the boxing world. He’s coming off back-to-back victories against Jake Paul and KSI in 2023, solidifying his status as a rising star in the sport.
The power-punching competition consisted of various challenges, each designed to test different aspects of the athletes’ striking abilities. Due to Fury’s recent hand surgery, both competitors were limited to using only their left hands for fairness.
In the initial challenge focusing on left hooks, Fury seemed to have the upper hand with impressive scores of 827 and 825. However, Aspinall rose to the occasion, clinching victory with a thunderous 843.
Surprisingly, Fury edged out Aspinall in the elbow strike challenge, a technique more commonly associated with MMA. The boxer recorded a score of 783, narrowly beating Aspinall’s 770.
When questioned about the likelihood of facing Jones, Aspinall expressed hope but acknowledged the uncertainty. “I do hope so, but I don’t know whether it’s going to happen or not,” he stated. “It’s not up to me. I would love that fight, whether he [Jones] would love it, I don’t know, you’d have to ask Jon that question, not me.”
As Jones prepares to defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden on November 17, the MMA world watches with bated breath.
