Main event fighter Joaquin “Newmansa” Buckley found himself in an unexpected standoff with venue security who failed to recognize him as one of the night’s headliners.
Buckley, who was scheduled to face former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the evening’s featured bout, documented the awkward encounter on social media, quickly going viral as fans witnessed the security confusion unfold in real-time.
“Out here at the arena right now. We’re running a little late, we’re running a little behind,” Buckley explained in his video, approaching the venue entrance with his team. When stopped by security, Buckley calmly stated, “Hey bro, I’m a main event,” attempting to explain his status for the evening’s card.
Despite his explanation, security personnel remained unmoved, creating a surreal situation where one of the night’s featured athletes was literally left standing outside the building where thousands had gathered to watch him compete.
“They’re not letting us in at the moment,” one of Buckley’s team members noted as they waited for resolution. The fighter maintained his composure throughout the ordeal, even as security suggested they needed to “get somebody” to verify his identity.
“We’re the main event… I understand,” Buckley said to the security staff, who directed him to wait while they sought verification from event organizers.
The situation highlighted an apparent communication breakdown between UFC operations and venue security, with Buckley noting, “The UFC didn’t couldn’t take us to here so we had to walk here ourselves.”
Despite the pre-fight complications, Buckley remained focused on his performance. “Ain’t nothing going to stop us from putting on the show,” he assured fans watching his feed. “I’m here for y’all. I’m here for Atlanta. But y’all got to get me in the building.”
The incident added an unusual wrinkle to Buckley’s fight night preparation, though he eventually made it inside to face Usman in their scheduled welterweight clash.
When the opening bell finally rang, Buckley faced a different kind of challenge as Usman showcased his elite wrestling skills throughout their five-round contest. Despite a valiant effort and late surge in the final round, Buckley ultimately fell short against the former champion, who earned a unanimous decision victory in his return to action.
While the evening didn’t end with his hand raised, Buckley’s pre-fight persistence demonstrated the same determination he later showed in the Octagon – though perhaps next time, the security team will recognize him on sight.
In his first bout since 2023, former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman made a dominant return at UFC Atlanta, out-wrestling rising star Joaquin Buckley en route to a unanimous decision win. Usman controlled much of the action with relentless takedowns—landing one in each of the first four rounds—and punished Buckley from top position with punches and elbows, even opening a cut early. Buckley had brief moments of success on the feet, especially in the final round where he stuffed takedowns and landed clean shots, but it was too little, too late. Usman’s superior grappling and fight IQ secured him the victory on all judges’ scorecards (49-46, 49-46, 48-47).
