Dana White’s Contender Series veteran Zach Borrego suffered a gruesome injury when his cauliflower ear burst during a chaotic bout at Fury FC 104 on Sunday.
The spectacle occurred during Borrego’s middleweight clash with undefeated prospect Brandon Holmes at Imagen Venues in Houston, Texas, leaving the octagon canvas looking like a CSI scene.
“Blood everywhere,” exclaimed one commentator as the final bell rang on what can only be described as a war of attrition between the two stars.
The three-round contest was nothing short of a rollercoaster. Holmes dominated the opening frame, repeatedly flooring Borrego with precise striking. But showing remarkable heart, Borrego rallied in the second round, landing significant blows that visibly staggered his undefeated opponent.
The third round, however, descended into chaos. Already sporting a smashed nose that forced him to breathe through his mouth, Borrego repeatedly lost his mouthpiece—more than six times throughout the fight. The referee eventually issued two point deductions for the repeated infractions.
Moments after the second deduction, Holmes capitalized, dropping Borrego with a devastating strike before unleashing a relentless barrage that continued until the final bell. It was during this exchange that Borrego’s cauliflower ear—a common injury among wrestlers and MMA stars—ruptured in spectacular fashion.
The injury echoed one of MMA’s most infamous moments when James Thompson suffered a similar ear explosion during a televised bout years ago.
Despite his valiant effort, Borrego (6-6) ultimately lost a unanimous decision. This marks another setback for the fighter who debuted on Contender Series in 2022 against Bo Nickal, losing via first-minute submission. Since then, Borrego has struggled to find consistent success, posting a 3-5 record and now riding a three-fight losing streak.
Meanwhile, Holmes (5-0) continues his perfect professional run, adding another impressive victory to his unblemished record.
As one social media post aptly captioned the aftermath: “How is your Sunday going?” For Zach Borrego, the answer is clearly: not well.
