In one of boxing’s most memorable displays of loyalty and retribution, Manny Pacquiao delivered a crushing performance against Antonio Margarito in 2010, following the latter’s insensitive mockery of Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach, who battles Parkinson’s disease.
The Filipino boxing legend, known for his lightning-fast combinations and incredible achievements across eight weight divisions, took particular offense when footage surfaced of Margarito imitating Roach’s condition before their scheduled bout.
What followed was a systematic dismantling of Margarito over twelve punishing rounds. Despite not securing a knockout, Pacquiao administered a thorough beating that left lasting damage on his opponent. The aftermath sent Margarito to the hospital with severe facial injuries, requiring surgery on his cheekbone and treatment for significant swelling around his eyes.
“He had to stay in hospital because his eyes were swollen and he had to get surgery on his cheekbone,” revealed Margarito’s trainer, Robert Garcia.
The victory was especially meaningful as it added another chapter to Pacquiao’s illustrious career, earning him the WBC super welterweight title. However, the deeper significance lay in defending the honor of Roach, who had been instrumental in shaping Pacquiao into a multi-division world champion.
The bout came with additional controversy surrounding Margarito, who had previously faced scrutiny in 2009 when suspicious materials were discovered in his hand wraps before a match with Shane Mosley. The incident sparked investigations into his previous bouts, particularly his victory over Miguel Cotto.
Pacquiao’s career, spanning four decades, includes victories over numerous boxing elite such as Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz, Ricky Hatton, and Oscar De La Hoya. His final professional record stands at 62-8-2, with his last appearance in 2021 against Yordenis Ugas.
The Margarito bout, however, remains particularly significant – not just for the title gained, but for demonstrating that disrespect towards those battling health conditions comes with consequences in the ring.
