(Video) Joe Rogan has no idea that the fried chicken and watermelon stereotypes have origins

Popular podcast host Joe Rogan recently sparked discussions after expressing confusion about racist food stereotypes during a recent episode of his show.

During the segment, Rogan questioned the historical association between certain foods and racial stereotypes, particularly focusing on fried chicken and watermelon.

“Fried chicken and watermelon, those are the two things that are associated with racism as far as foods, which are universally loved,” Rogan said during the episode. “Like, fried chicken is delicious, watermelon is delicious.”

The host appeared unaware of the complex historical context behind these stereotypes, which trace back to the post-Civil War era in America. In the aftermath of slavery, black Americans faced dehumanizing stereotypes, and certain foods became racialized, often used to perpetuate caricatures of African Americans. The stereotype of black people being particularly fond of fried chicken, for example, became popularized in minstrel shows, while watermelon was similarly associated with the idea of lazy, subservient black people in need of constant amusement.

“Like, how could that possibly be a negative, that certain people like delicious food?” Rogan continued. “To this day, it’s one of those things. It’s so bizarre.”

Rogan emphasized the universal appeal of these foods, stating, “You could bring up all kinds of different delicious foods. But if you bring up fried chicken, which everybody eats, everybody who eats meat and loves delicious food loves a good fried chicken.”

The comments have drawn attention from historians and social commentators who note the importance of understanding the historical context behind such stereotypes, even when discussing seemingly positive associations with food.
