MMA legend Bas Rutten recently shared one of his most intense street fight stories on Mike Perry’s podcast. The incident took place years ago when Rutten was attacked by two men outside a party.
Rutten recounted: “As soon as we got outside they both attacked me. I remember they were both in front of me and I literally went ‘bang bang’ and both went down.”
The fight started after Rutten had intervened when one of the men knocked out three women at the party, including Rutten’s mother-in-law. Rutten tried to de-escalate by pushing the man outside, not realizing his son-in-law was also there.
Once outside, both men suddenly attacked Rutten. Using his martial arts skills, Rutten quickly knocked them both down. However, one got back up and charged at Rutten again.
“I wanted to be cool and kick him in the head,” Rutten explained. “I did it but I did it poorly by accident – he came in too close, too fast. With my shin bone, his skull broke, teeth out, jaw broke. It was bad.”
The incident led to legal troubles for Rutten, who had to go to court. Fortunately, multiple witnesses attested to Rutten acting in self-defense after the initial unprovoked attacks.
Rutten noted this was one of his worst street fight experiences, highlighting the dangers of real-world violence outside the ring. He advocates strongly against getting into fights, preferring to resolve conflicts peacefully whenever possible.
MMA legend Bas Rutten details he was bullied and how martial arts helped him regain confidence
Bas Rutten recently shared the story of his transformation from a bullied child to a martial arts icon. Speaking on Mike Perry’s podcast, Rutten revealed that his difficult childhood, marked by severe health problems and constant bullying, played a key role in shaping his future career. Growing up in the Netherlands, Rutten battled a painful skin condition and asthma, making him a frequent target for bullies. Nicknamed “the leper” by his classmates, he endured relentless teasing, but this adversity eventually pushed him toward martial arts.
At 14, after watching a Bruce Lee movie, Rutten found inspiration in martial arts. Determined to stand up for himself, he began training, and his natural talent quickly became apparent. Within months, he was training with adults. His skills were soon put to the test when he confronted the biggest bully in his school, knocking him out in a decisive moment. Though the fight led to police involvement and a temporary ban from training by his parents, Rutten had found his calling. He began confronting all his tormentors, not only standing up for himself but also defending other bullied kids.
Rutten’s journey from a bullied child to a UFC Hall of Famer is a testament to the transformative power of martial arts. He credits his bullies for pushing him to discover his inner strength and forge the successful life he leads today. At 59, Rutten remains passionate about fitness and continues to advocate for breathing techniques to help fighters improve endurance, drawing from his own experience overcoming asthma.
His story stands as an inspiration, showing how channeling adversity into a positive pursuit can lead to greatness.
