Bodycam footage from a March 27 traffic stop in South Florida has gone viral, showing former UFC title challenger Marlon Moraes doing what he does best, executing a flawless takedown. Only this time, the former bantamweight contender was wearing a badge instead of MMA gloves.
The incident unfolded around 1:28 a.m. in a Coral Springs parking lot, where Moraes and fellow officers had pulled over a vehicle for speeding, dark window tints, and swerving. What started as a routine stop quickly escalated when the passenger became increasingly aggressive and confrontational.
The motorist’s night began to spiral after his companion who had been behind the wheel, appeared unable to provide proper documentation and showed signs of impairment. Officers informed the man that he wouldn’t be able to drive the vehicle home, and arrangements would need to be made.
Throughout the encounter which stretched over 30 minutes, the passenger grew more belligerent. He repeatedly interrupted officers, refused to cooperate with simple requests to call a rideshare service, and hurled insults at the police.
“Shut the [ ] up. I told you I am not driving,” the man told a female officer at one point during the contentious exchange.
As the situation deteriorated, the motorist began directing his hostility specifically toward Moraes, stepping into the officer’s personal space while continuing his verbal tirade.
“Don’t be like that. Don’t be a [ ],” he said, pointing toward another officer while standing face-to-face with the former UFC athlete.
Moraes initially attempted to de-escalate, giving the man a gentle push to create distance. But when officers informed them that the vehicle would be towed, the confrontation intensified.
“You ain’t that big bro,” the man responded. “I can [ ] you up.”
The 24-13-1 athlete remained professional, issuing clear warnings that continuing the aggressive behavior would only worsen his situation.
“You can try,” Moraes said calmly in the footage.
The warning went unheeded. The motorist took two deliberate steps toward Moraes, closing the distance between them.
That proved to be a miscalculation. In one fluid motion, Moraes executed a textbook hip toss, sending the motorist to the pavement with just one arm. Other officers immediately moved in, placing the man in handcuffs and bringing the confrontation to an end.
The Brazilian star joined the Davie Police Department in June 2024 before later transferring to the Coral Springs Police Department. The career change wasn’t just about finding post-competition work. Moraes told CBS Miami that service to others drives his commitment to law enforcement.
“Every time I go to work, I want to help someone,” Moraes explained. “When the call comes, I want to be the one.”
Coral Springs Deputy Chief Ryan Gallagher noted that this mindset distinguished Moraes during the hiring process, characterizing him as compassionate and genuinely committed to community service.
Before trading his gloves for a badge, the 38-year-old Moraes had established himself as one of Brazil’s top stars in MMA.
