UFC veteran Stephen Wonderboy Thompson had his Twitter hacked in a crypto scam attempt

Former UFC welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson became the latest target of cryptocurrency scammers when his X (formerly Twitter) account was compromised on Sunday.

The parties briefly took control of Thompson’s account, which boasts over 402,000 followers, and renamed it to “OverviewXPM” while attempting to promote cryptocurrency schemes through direct messages and posts.

Thompson quickly regained access to his account and addressed his followers: “My apologies to anyone who received any DMs from me or had to endure tweets about coins. Do not fall for any of that stuff!!!!!”

The incident follows a similar attack on UFC’s official Instagram account earlier this year, where cybercriminals promoted unauthorized cryptocurrency offerings, resulting in followers losing more than $300,000 within an hour.

The martial arts community rallied behind Thompson during the breach, with fans actively warning others about the hack through comments and community notes on the suspicious posts.

After recovering his account, a grateful Thompson acknowledged his supporters: “Y’all even had community notes on some tweets! I love all y’all!!!”

The swift response from X’s support team appears to have minimized potential damages, though it remains unclear if any followers fell victim to the cryptocurrency scheme.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges social media platforms and public figures face in protecting their digital presence from cryptocurrency scammers, who increasingly target high-profile accounts to execute their schemes.
