In an exclusive interview with Submission Radio, Jorge Clement confirmed that UFC Featherweight Champion Ilia Topuria has officially split from his long-time coaching team, marking a significant change in the fighter’s career trajectory.
Clement, who has been with Topuria throughout his rise to UFC stardom, revealed that the separation was mutually agreed upon just last week after a discussion between both parties. According to Clement, Topuria has relocated to Madrid where he has established his own training facility at his home.
“He go to live to Madrid and I have my own project here with my brother. We have our family. We have our club. We have a lot of fighters,” Clement explained. “Ilia go to Madrid. He have his own gym in his house and he want all the energy on him.”
When asked about his feelings regarding the split, Clement admitted there was some sadness but emphasized there was no animosity between them. “Of course, we are a little sad, but I want everything in his life continue going well. I want all good for him and his brother.”
Despite the professional separation, Clement insisted they remain friends. He described the parting as “gender” (amicable) and referred to Topuria as someone who “always he’s going to be our like our son.”
Regarding Topuria’s upcoming title defense against Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 on June 29th, Clement dismissed concerns that the coaching change might negatively impact the champion’s performance. “His performance is going to be great. He’s going to win. I know him. I know this sport and I think he is very focused.”
Clement, who awarded Topuria his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, spoke highly of the champion’s well-rounded skill set. He noted that while Oliveira is known for his submission game, Topuria has the takedown defense and striking power to prevail.
The coach also addressed speculation about potential future matchups for Topuria, identifying Arman Tsarukyan as possibly the most dangerous challenger but suggesting that a bout with Paddy Pimblett would generate significant fan interest due to their history of trash talk.
While Clement continues to focus on his gym and promotion company with several fighters competing in upcoming events, this split marks the end of a successful partnership that guided Topuria to UFC championship status.
