Maynard James Keenan is the renowned lead vocalist of rock bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. He has achieved a significant milestone by attaining his coveted black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Celebrating this milestone, a heartfelt announcement surfaced honoring Keenan’s success.
The statement read: “Congratulations to my friend, training partner, and sometimes nemesis @iamthebriefcase on the monumental task of receiving his Black Belt today. Was an amazing event, with a bunch of truly amazing people. Today, Jiu-Jitsu became just a little bit better.”
Keenan’s journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu spans an impressive two-decade period, emphasizing his unwavering commitment and passion for the martial art form.
It was disclosed in January 2023 that Keenan was providing an introductory course in the gentle art. He was instructing in Cottonwood, Arizona’s Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
“Heads up to any Jiu Jitsu aficionados traveling to AZ to attend the Super Bowl. Cottonwood is just a short drive north from Phx. Maynard James Keenan will be hosting ‘An Introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’ on Sat., Feb. 11 at the new Verde Valley BJJ facility. This is a detailed orientation for beginners, white belts and blue belts. Upper belts are welcome to attend. There will be two sessions and space is limited.”
In addition to in-person classes, Keenan generously shared his expertise through video tutorials and engaging interviews. This shows his extensive experience in the sport cultivated over decades.
Amidst his martial arts pursuits, Tool is currently embarked on a tour with scheduled performances running through February. The tour will end in Las Vegas, NV.
When questioned in October about new music for the band, Keenan stated: “I never mention anything until we actually have it in our hands, because every time I say it out loud it runs further away like Groundhog Day.”
