The only MMA star to drop Jon Jones in practice feels uncomfortable talking about it

In a sport where legends are built on dominance inside the cage, even the smallest cracks in a champion’s aura can become points of intrigue. Recently, a rare story surfaced involving Jon Jones—arguably one of the greatest MMA stars of all time—being dropped in a training session. The man responsible? Former UFC star Adlan Amagov.

While many fans were first introduced to the story through former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit, who discussed the incident on the Jaxxon podcast, Amagov himself has now reluctantly confirmed it during an appearance on Hustle MMA.

“To be honest with you, I’m not comfortable talking about things that happen in sparring,” Amagov admitted. “I’ve never told anybody about it. But when [Jon Jones] mentioned it in an interview here in Moscow, they all started calling me and asking about it. Well, it happened in sparring.”

The incident, which had been whispered about for years, gained more attention when Jones himself acknowledged it during an interview in Russia. This fueled further speculation about how the Chechen striker managed to drop the former light heavyweight champion—an achievement unheard of in both sanctioned fights and training sessions.

Carlos Condit, who was present during the sparring at Jackson-Wink MMA, recalled the details vividly. According to him, Amagov was already getting the better of him in their exchanges before later catching Jones with a spinning back kick.

“He f-cked me up. And then I think a round or two later, he hit Jon with that spinning back kick,” Condit stated, confirming that the strike sent Jones to the mat.

Despite his success in the gym, Amagov never overstayed his welcome at Jackson-Wink. Condit added an interesting footnote to the story, stating that while Amagov wasn’t explicitly kicked out of the gym,

“We never saw him again after that.”

Amagov, who retired from professional MMA with an impressive 14-2 record, was known for his dynamic striking, particularly his spinning techniques. His UFC career was brief but impactful, with his last fight ending in such brutal fashion that his opponent had to be stretchered out.

For someone as dominant as Jon Jones—who has steamrolled through champions and legends alike—stories of him being dropped are virtually nonexistent. That’s precisely why this incident stands out. Yet, despite the significance of what happened, Amagov’s reluctance to discuss it reinforces the long-standing gym code: what happens in sparring stays in sparring.

With Jones now competing at heavyweight and still regarded as an almost mythical figure in the sport, this rare training moment remains one of the only glimpses into his vulnerabilities. And while Adlan Amagov may never go into detail about it, the confirmation alone is enough to leave fans wondering what could have been if these two had ever met in an official fight.
