Unlike some martial arts such as karate or judo, Muay Thai traditionally lacks a formal belt grading system. Instead, practitioners typically advance through the ranks based on practical skill acquired through dedicated training, sparring, and competitive experience.
However, Thailand’s recent endeavor aims to redefine the landscape of Muay Thai education and practice. At a press conference held in Bangkok, Chairman of the Sports Industry Steering Subcommittee, Professor Pimol Srivikorn, unveiled the country’s ambitious plans to enhance the global appeal of Muay Thai and bolster Thailand’s economic prospects.
With six strategic objectives in sight, Thailand seeks to standardize Muay Thai to ensure superior international quality control and facilitate trade opportunities. Central to this initiative is the introduction of a comprehensive Muay Thai curriculum, complete with a novel grading system inspired by the nation’s cultural heritage.
In a departure from conventional belt systems, Muay Thai practitioners will now progress through the ranks adorned with distinctive armbands known as Prajiat. Professor Srivikorn emphasized the significance of this development, drawing parallels with established martial arts such as Taekwondo and karate, which boast recognizable belt hierarchies.
The proposed grading system promises to provide clarity and structure to Muay Thai education, allowing students of all ages to gauge their progress and accomplishments.
