In the world of mixed martial arts, rivalries often extend beyond the octagon, and the latest tension between UFC fighters Sean Strickland and Khalil Rountree Jr. is no exception. Strickland recently shed light on the origins of their discord, which stems from past interactions that left a lasting impression on the outspoken middleweight contender.
The animosity first became public in March 2022 when Strickland took to social media to criticize Rountree’s emotional post-fight interview following a victory at UFC Vegas 50. Strickland’s comments about Rountree’s display of emotion drew attention and controversy among fans and fellow fighters alike.
However, Strickland’s recent interview with MMA journalist The Schmo revealed that his issues with Rountree run deeper than just the viral social media moment. Strickland recounted an incident involving Rountree that he claims showcased behavior he found objectionable.
According to Strickland, the incident occurred when Rountree attempted to demonstrate an MMA technique on a woman at an event. Strickland alleges that when the woman made a joke in response, Rountree reacted in a way that Strickland deemed overly sensitive and politically charged.
“Khalil goes and grabs her and says, ‘I want to show a move,'” Strickland explained. “And she makes a joke. She goes, ‘Oh, harassment.’ And Khalil, he goes, ‘I’m a man in America. You don’t accuse me of that.'”
“And Khalil, this little bi*ch, beta male bi*ch, he goes, ‘I’m a black man,’” Strickland continues, enraged. “Khalil, are you a black man? We don’t know yet. You don’t sound like a black man. He goes, ‘I’m a black man in America. You don’t accuse me of that.’ And after that, that moment, when I realized Khalil is a liberal c*ck beta male. We can’t be friends anymore.”
Strickland expressed his disapproval of Rountree’s reaction, using colorful language to describe his fellow fighter’s attitude and political leanings. He concluded by stating that this encounter marked the end of any potential friendship between the two.
It’s worth noting that Strickland himself has faced criticism for his own emotional displays, including a tearful moment during a podcast appearance in 2023. This apparent contradiction has not gone unnoticed by MMA fans, who have pointed out the irony in Strickland’s stance.
UFC stars Khalil Rountree, Dominick Cruz, and Jeremy Stephens have become embroiled in controversy due to their affiliation with the Choice Center, an organization accused of operating like a cult and a multi-level marketing scheme.
The Choice Center, founded by Robin Williams in 1998, promotes itself as a program for developing emotional intelligence but has been criticized for its high-priced courses, ranging from $644 to $5,000, and employing tactics like sleep deprivation and recruitment pressure. The involvement of these fighters, who have reached high levels within the Center, has come under scrutiny following comments by Sean Strickland on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
