In a press conference today, former President Donald Trump expressed frustration about the prominence of transgender issues in public discourse, making controversial remarks about the transgender community.
“Everything is transgender, everybody transgender, that is all you hear about — and that is why we won the election in record numbers,” Trump stated. He also claimed that trans Americans “are hurting women very badly.”
The irony of Trump’s complaint lies in his own administration’s significant role in bringing transgender issues to the forefront. During his presidency, Trump implemented multiple executive orders targeting the transgender community, including bans on gender-affirming care for youth, restrictions on transgender military service, and prohibitions on trans women in women’s sports.
The focus on transgender issues has intensified under the joint efforts of Trump and Elon Musk, particularly through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Both have recently promoted unsubstantiated claims about government funding for “transgender surgery on mice,” using these assertions to justify various spending cuts.
Coinciding with Trump’s remarks, conservative groups and lawmakers organized “DeTrans Awareness Day” in Washington, D.C., celebrating the administration’s policies affecting the transgender community. The event highlighted “detransitioners,” a small subset of individuals who have stopped or reversed their gender transition process.
During the event, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) advocated for cutting federal funding to institutions providing gender-affirming care to minors, stating, “Taxpayer dollars should not be flowing to institutions that are causing life-altering harm to kids in the name of an ideology.”
Research shows that most transgender individuals who pursue medical transition do so in their mid to late twenties, with very few seeking surgical interventions before adulthood. Despite this, Republicans continue to target healthcare providers offering gender-affirming care to young people, claiming they operate under an ideological agenda rather than medical necessity.
Former President Donald Trump has signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” barring biological males from competing in women’s athletics. This marks his fourth executive order on transgender issues since taking office, reinforcing his stance on gender distinctions in sports. Declaring, “The war on women’s sports is over,” Trump has long argued that biological differences create an unfair playing field. The move comes amid a growing national debate, with at least 24 states already implementing similar bans. While conservative figures like Riley Gaines support the order, legal challenges continue, highlighting the divisiveness of the issue.
A CNN data analysis by senior political analyst Harry Enten reveals that 79% of Americans oppose allowing transgender female athletes to compete in women’s sports, marking a significant increase from 62% in 2021. The opposition spans political lines, with 67% of Democrats, 64% of independents, and 94% of Republicans against such participation. This rare bipartisan agreement underscores the growing resistance to transgender inclusion in female sports. The findings coincide with Trump’s recent executive order enforcing Title IX protections based on biological sex, threatening federal funding for non-compliant schools.
The Republican Party has taken numerous actions highlighting transgender issues, from posting “BIOLOGICAL” signs above Capitol bathrooms to proposing legislation limiting transgender rights. These actions directly contribute to the very visibility Trump now criticizes.
