Manny Pacquiao stepped into the role of boxing coach recently, holding mitts for an unexpected student: the president of Poland. Footage of the session shows the eight-division world champion working the pads with Karol Nawrocki.
Boxing coach Tony Jeffries broke down the clip in a recent video, noting there was more going on than a simple photo opportunity.
Jeffries pointed out early on that the president was not a complete novice.
“And already I can see he’s got some experience just by doing the old Eastern European arm warm-up here.”
Pacquiao, dressed casually in jeans rather than training gear did not seem concerned about his outfit.
“He’s wearing his jeans. But something tells us he doesn’t care, does he? He’s not bothered by this.”
Once the mitt work began, Jeffries broke down the technical details.
“That guy there has got a strong jab,” he said, pointing to clean sound on the pads despite Pacquiao missing the opening punch. “Manny doesn’t really catch the first punch, probably. But he’s just getting used to it. But the second jab, boom, catches it.”
Jeffries highlighted the president’s footwork and positioning, including his habit of keeping his guard up.
“The president’s got his left hand up by his face. He’s a southpaw. And he’s thrown that rear uppercut nicely on the mitt.”
He added that many boxers drop their rear hand when throwing that punch, but the president kept his guard disciplined throughout.
The session included a string of lead uppercuts, double jabs and lead hooks, with Jeffries counting out the uppercut sequence as Pacquiao fed them one after another.
“I love it,” he said, clearly entertained by the exchange. He also noted the president’s choice of footwear was not exactly built for the ring.
“Look at them shoes he’s wearing. I can just imagine your feet is slipping everywhere in a boxing ring with a plastic canvas like that with them shoes on, shiny shoes.”
Jeffries also dug into the president’s background, finding that Karol Nawrocki boxed as an amateur, representing a club in Gdansk and winning a junior heavyweight title.
“Imagine that, having a president who was a heavyweight amateur boxing champion,” he said. “I would absolutely love that in my country, England, where I’m from originally, even America.”
