Stanford neuroscience professor and popular podcaster Dr. Andrew Huberman recently appeared on the SmartLess podcast where he stated that every male over 40 should consider taking low-dose tadalafil daily.
During the conversation with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Huberman specifically addressed the benefits of tadalafil when discussing nicotine’s effects on blood pressure and vasoconstriction.
“I had a guy on my podcast who’s a colleague of mine at Stanford, Mike Eisenberg,” Huberman explained. “He’s our head of male se xual health and hormone clinic at Stanford. He’s an MD PhD, the top-notch doctor in urology and this area. He’s a serious scientist and clinician.”
Huberman then delivered his central message: “His words: every male 40 years or older should be taking low dose, meaning 2.5 to 5 milligrams of tadalafil each evening to lower their blood pressure, dilate their capillaries.”
He clarified that while higher doses of this medication are known as Cialis and used for erectile dysfunction, “this d**g tadalafil was initially developed to treat blood pressure and for vasodilation, to dilate the small capillaries of the brain and body in order to encourage prostate health and to encourage brain health.”
The neuroscientist emphasized the accessibility of this approach: “It’s very inexpensive. It costs pennies now because it’s generic for people out there. You do need a prescription.”
Huberman connected this recommendation to discussions about cardiovascular health, noting that vasoconstriction involves “a clamping off of the little capillaries and vessels, in particular in the periphery, in the fingers, in other extremities, and in the brain.” He explained that issues like strokes involve “cutting off of blood supply to small regions of the brain.”
The hosts had been exploring various health interventions, from nicotine use to supplements. Huberman positioned tadalafil as a way to counteract some negative cardiovascular effects while promoting long-term health.
“There’s a lot of evidence as to why this is a good thing,” he stated, referring to the protective effects on prostate and brain health. He specifically mentioned the importance for men due to prostate concerns, while noting that “women should talk to their doctors whether or not this is applicable to women.”
By taking the medication daily at low doses, men may support their cardiovascular system, maintain healthy blood flow to vital organs, and potentially reduce risks associated with aging.
