Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson has made a surprising revelation about his time in prison, stating that he earned a substantial amount of money while incarcerated.
Tyson, who was sentenced to six years in prison in 1992 after being convicted of SA, served almost three years before his release in 1995. During a recent appearance on “The Art of Ward” podcast with fellow former world champion Andre Ward, Tyson disclosed the unexpected financial windfall he experienced during his time behind bars.
“When I went to prison I had $15m, when I came out I must have had $300-400m,” Tyson said. “I’m signing contracts in prison.”
The boxing legend attributed this remarkable increase in his wealth to his promoter, Don King, who continued to bring him deals to sign while he was incarcerated.
Tyson also reflected on his personal growth during his time in prison, admitting that he initially struggled to adapt to life behind bars. “They [other inmates] were showing me respect but I was a jerk,” he confessed. “I had to realise after going in the hole and fighting with the guards that there has to be a better way.”
The former champion explained that his initial attitude led to additional time being added to his sentence, prompting him to change his approach. “So I learned how to move and respect everybody because they wanted to be king to me, but I wasn’t accepting their kindness,” Tyson said. “I was too bitter and so I learned how to give respect and get respect. It was brilliant after that.”
Now 58 years old, Tyson is preparing for a return to the ring in an exhibition match against YouTube personality turned boxer Jake Paul. The event is scheduled to take place on November 15 and will be broadcast live on Netflix.
Addressing concerns about the significant age gap between himself and his opponent, Tyson remained confident in his abilities. “I don’t think I’m 58. Do you think I feel 58 when I’m fighting these young n****** in the gym, and they’re bashing me them big strong mother*******, and I’m bashing them back,” he stated.
Tyson emphasized his unique physical condition, attributing it to his consistent training regimen. “Listen, you can’t compare me with other people my age because other people my age haven’t been training as long, consistently as me,” he explained. “I’m just a different species of human being, I think because I’m very active in what I do. I don’t sit around and do nothing.”
The upcoming exhibition match has generated significant buzz in the boxing world, with Tyson promising an entertaining evening for spectators in Dallas, where the event will take place.
