UFC light heavyweight contender Khalil Rountree recently opened up about his remarkable weight loss journey through martial arts. Speaking on the Mighty Podcast, Rountree shared how he transformed his life and body after hitting rock bottom.
“I was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. I only drank soda or alc ohol. I only ate fast food,” Rountree revealed about his past lifestyle. “I got to a point where I was very very depressed, suicidal. I knew that I needed to make a change.”

The turning point came when Rountree and his brother started watching The Ultimate Fighter reality show. Seeing fighters with similar backgrounds inspired Rountree to give martial arts a try as a way to turn his life around.
After joining a Muay Thai gym, Rountree immediately fell in love with the training. “After the first time I kicked the pad and then the coach was like ‘again’ and boom, I was like ‘I like this,'” he recalled.
However, years of unhealthy habits caught up with him quickly. “I couldn’t breathe dude from the cigarettes,” Rountree said. This motivated him to quit smoking cold turkey so he could continue training.
As Rountree became more dedicated to martial arts, he also overhauled his diet based on what he saw other fighters eating. “I started to make friends within the gym. I started to see what the people were eating – they’d bring their food to the gym, chicken rice broccoli. So I went home and I started doing that,” he explained.
The results were dramatic. In just 11 months of consistent training and healthy eating, Rountree lost an incredible 100 pounds. This transformation set him on the path to eventually becoming a successful UFC fighter.
Rountree’s story is a powerful example of how martial arts can be a vehicle for positive life changes far beyond just learning to fight. By providing structure, community, and healthy habits, training helped Rountree turn his health and outlook around completely in less than a year.
