Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has stirred controversy with recent comments dismissing the martial arts prowess of Irish athletes during a conversation with PFL MMA.
“Brother, Ireland don’t have fighters, but let’s be honest, how many fighters do you know from Ireland? Paul Hughes and Conor and who else? There is no fighter, brother,” Nurmagomedov stated. “You can Dagestan, you can understand… Let’s be honest, Dagestan level of MMA here, but Ireland level, not even half of Dagestan level.”
The remarks have drawn swift reaction from the MMA community, including British UFC veteran Darren Till, who defended Ireland’s fighting legacy. “I’ve always respected Khabib and his team a lot they are fantastic fighters,” Till wrote on social media. “But for him to sit there and say fighters from Ireland are low level in comparison of sizes of countries and production Ireland is actually way ahead.”
Till emphasized the population disparity between the nations, noting that “Ireland is so f**king small and Russia is so f**king big” while praising Ireland’s consistent ability to produce elite competitors.
Irish star Paul Hughes, directly referenced in Nurmagomedov’s comments, responded to the video shared on PFL’s Instagram with a succinct message: “Just wait to I get my hands on yo boy.”
The timing is particularly relevant as Hughes prepares to face Nurmagomedov’s cousin, Usman Nurmagomedov, for the Bellator lightweight championship on January 25. The bout is being promoted as ‘Dagestan vs Ireland 2.0,’ with both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor expected to be in attendance supporting their respective sides.
The debate over talent between the nations continues, though Nurmagomedov’s own legacy remains untouchable with his perfect 29-0 professional record. However, according to his manager Ali Abdelaziz, that record could potentially be surpassed by another family member, as Umar Nurmagomedov (17-0) progresses through the bantamweight ranks.
