In an enlightening podcast interview with Demetrius Johnson, UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev revealed his surprisingly simple approach to recovery and training.
Despite being one of the most dominant mixed martial artists in the world, Makhachev’s recovery methods are remarkably straightforward. His primary focus is on two fundamental elements: quality sleep and clean nutrition.
“You have to rest; you have to sleep. We just go home, sleep good, eat clean, good food. You know, just nothing special, honestly. But don’t drink something bad. Just sleep and eat good. I think this is the most important thing.”
Contrary to many modern athletes who rely on complex recovery techniques, Makhachev avoids elaborate protocols. He rarely uses supplements and doesn’t engage in practices like cold plunging. Instead, he occasionally uses a sauna once a week and gets massage and stretching during camps.
“No, we like to do sauna, but once a week, like Sunday, Saturday. We go to the sauna, and that’s kind of your recovery. And I go to one when I am in camp. I do massage. I do a lot of stretching after training.”
“once a week, we do sauna, massage, like recovery. We go to UFC PI. They have a lot of things for recovery. We use it.”
This minimalist approach extends to his overall lifestyle. Makhachev maintains a consistent weight, typically around 180 pounds, and is disciplined about his diet. He doesn’t drink soda and tries to avoid late-night eating.
Khabib Nurmagomedov previously spoke similarly.
Khabib recalled,
“We had guys on our team that didn’t last very long. For example, we had a training camp in the mountains. We didn’t have the greatest conditions there; we slept on the floor and trained outside. We ran on stones up the mountains, old school style.”
These conditions were a filter for commitment, as many would-be teammates quickly abandoned the camp upon discovering the lack of amenities like Wi-Fi, showers, and washing machines.
As Khabib put it, “My father would notice that guys like that came and went. He’d always say: ‘If we lose him, we’re not losing anything. Guys eliminated themselves.’”
For those who stayed, the hardships forged unbreakable bonds and a relentless focus on their goals.
“You can’t veer off the path towards your goal. There will be obstacles on the way, such as injuries and finances – but if you keep going, you’ll reach success.”
What truly sets Makhachev apart is his consistent training regimen. This dedication, combined with his simple recovery methods, has helped him become a pound-for-pound elite stars.
For aspiring athletes, Makhachev’s message is clear: focus on fundamentals, prioritize rest, eat well, and maintain consistent discipline.
