IOC Presidental candidate stands up for Women’s sports: When it comes to the biology of sport it is very very clear-cut

In a candid conversation with broadcaster Piers Morgan, Sebastian Coe, candidate for International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, addressed the controversial topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports, emphasizing the importance of protecting competitive integrity.

Coe, a former Olympic champion and current World Athletics president, expressed his stance on maintaining separate categories for male and female athletes in sports competitions.

“I welcome the commitment to maintaining the integrity of women’s sport and for me this is absolutely about the integrity of competition,” Coe stated during the interview.

Despite describing himself as socially liberal, Coe maintained a firm position on the biological aspects of athletic competition. “I really do not choose nor do I have any predisposition to tell people how to live their lives but when it comes to the biology of sport it is very very clear-cut,” he explained, adding that he was surprised by how contentious the discussion has become.

Morgan, agreeing with Coe’s perspective, suggested that future generations might view the current debate differently. “I’m thinking about in 20-30 years time I’m convinced we’re gonna look back on this period and think everybody went completely nuts,” Morgan said, noting that gender separation at the Olympics exists for a specific purpose.

Coe concurred with Morgan’s assessment that without separate categories, “you would lose women’s sport… It is as simple as that,” highlighting the fundamental reason behind sex-based sporting divisions at the Olympic level.

The discussion comes at a crucial time as sports governing bodies worldwide continue to grapple with policies regarding transgender athlete participation in competitive sports.
