WWE legend Kurt Angle has prompted fans to retire a long-running nickname after opening up about his painful past struggles.
For years, wrestling enthusiasts had affectionately used the term “Perc Angle” to describe the Olympic gold medalist’s notably intense performances during a difficult period in his career when he was battling a life changing habit.
In a heartfelt interview with Chris Van Vliet, Angle addressed the nickname’s impact on him. “I understand that, you know, for the fans, it’s more of a term of endearment… I know they’re not saying it to try to hurt my feelings… I know they don’t mean it,” Angle shared. However, he added, “It was a time when I was in a dark situation in my life, and that is the part that I don’t want to remember.”
“I was taking 65 extra strength Vicodin a day,” Angle revealed in a recent interview. “I had 12 different doctors that were giving me 12 different prescriptions. And I had to set up a calendar because you couldn’t go to the same pharmacy. So you had to have 12 different doctors go to 12 different pharmacies.”
In addition to getting multiple prescriptions, Angle also admitted to buying 500 pills from Mexico each month. All told, he was consuming around 2000 pills per month. At the peak of it, he was spending $7,000 a month to feed his habit.
Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Angle elaborated on his feelings: “I’ve noticed the ‘Perc Angle’ nickname trending on social media. While I know it’s made in jest, it reminds me of a time when I struggled deeply”

The wrestling icon, who has been clean for 12 years, emphasized his dedication to supporting others facing similar challenges. “I’ve since built a life dedicated to purpose and service.”
“but it’s never too late to get help,” he added.
The wrestling community has responded with overwhelming support, with fans immediately vowing to retire the controversial nickname. Some supporters have suggested more positive alternatives, including “Prime Angle,” to celebrate the wrestler’s legendary career and successful recovery journey.

Angle concluded his message with gratitude: “I appreciate all the positive feedback and support. To my fans: thank you for never giving up on me. I love you all.”
