Dana White pulls a 180 on Jake Paul vs Tyson comments: Mike Tyson is one of the most unique guys

UFC CEO Dana White recently expressed initial concerns regarding the upcoming bout between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. However, his worries seem to have dissipated after a discussion with Tyson’s wife regarding the former heavyweight champion’s preparations.

White had previously criticized both Paul and Tyson for their decision to engage in the match, highlighting the significant age gap between the two. With Tyson being 58 years old at the time of the bout and Paul considerably younger at 27, White raised valid concerns.

He explained on a podcast: “When the fight happens he’ll be 58 years old, it will be a 31 age difference. You know Jake Paul did fight a kid his own age and he lost.”

Paul’s recent victory over Ryan Bourland showcased his determination to climb the ranks in boxing. Despite criticism, Paul remains steadfast in his pursuit of success in the ring with the upcoming match against Tyson on July 20th.

In a conversation on Lex Fridman’s podcast, White reiterated his disapproval of Tyson’s decision while acknowledging his inability to do anything. White emphasized his respect for Tyson but expressed discomfort with the idea of Tyson boxing at that age.

He said: “I love Mike Tyson and I’m not a fan of anybody fighting at our age, but he’s a grown man obviously and he’s going to do what he’s going to do.”

White’s concerns were somewhat alleviated following a discussion with Tyson’s wife, who revealed the extent of Tyson’s commitment to training for the match.

White said: “At least I know, I talked to his wife a couple of days ago and he’s taking it serious and he’s training for it and you know, we’ll see how it plays out.”

Despite his reservations, White praised Tyson’s position in the world of combat sports. Tyson’s ability to generate income beyond boxing sets him apart from his peers.

White continued: “I think Mike Tyson is one of the most unique guys who have crossed over, any of the other fighters from his generation have no way of making money without fighting and Mike Tyson has made a lot of money outside of fighting.”

“Tyson still has that aura that if he walked in a restaurant, you’d be like holy f*ck that’s Mike Tyson.”
