Former top-division sumo wrestler Terutsuyoshi has announced his plans to enter the world of Mixed Martial Arts. The 29-year-old athlete, known for his dynamic movements and vigorous salt-throwing ritual in the sumo ring, is set to embark on a new chapter in his career.
Terutsuyoshi, whose real name is Shoki Terutsuyoshi, recently retired from professional sumo after a career spanning 14 years. Standing at just under 5’7″ and weighing approximately 260 pounds, he was one of the smaller competitors in sumo’s top division. Despite his size disadvantage, Terutsuyoshi’s agility and technique allowed him to rise through the ranks, reaching his highest position of Maegashira 3.
The Minamiawaji City native made his professional sumo debut in 2010 and quickly became a fan favorite due to his enthusiastic salt-throwing ritual and tenacious style. He reached the juryo division in 2017 and made his makuuchi (top division) debut in 2019. In the same year, he achieved a remarkable 12-3 record in the Nagoya tournament, earning him the Fighting Spirit Prize.
Now, Terutsuyoshi is channeling his competitive spirit into MMA. “I am always ready when I am put to the test. Even if I had to compete tomorrow, I would be ready,” he stated in a recent documentary showcasing his transition to the new sport. The film captures Terutsuyoshi’s rigorous training regimen, which includes beach workouts – a passion he maintained from his sumo days – and intense sessions in the MMA ring.
Despite the significant differences between sumo and MMA, Terutsuyoshi remains confident in his ability to succeed. “I have been successful once, so I know how to do it again,” he asserted. “I want to show people once again what I am capable of. I do not want to disappoint the expectations of those who support me.”
The former wrestler’s determination is evident in his approach to this new challenge. “At this moment, I do not think about the fact that I am dedicating myself to martial arts, but simply about the fact that I will have to compete,” Terutsuyoshi explained. “I imagine the opponent in front of me, and I have no other choice than to do my duty: increase my strength, and see how much I can endure while I strike until they can no longer stand.”
Terutsuyoshi’s transition from sumo to MMA is not without precedent. Several former sumo wrestlers have found success in various combat sports, bringing their unique blend of size, strength, and technique to new arenas. However, Terutsuyoshi’s relatively small stature for a sumo wrestler may prove advantageous in MMA, where agility and speed often play crucial roles.
Terutsuyoshi’s match will be part of the 巌流島VIRTUAL SURVIVAL2 event taking place on September 9.
