Renowned boxing icon Roberto Duran, at the age of 72, is currently undergoing medical attention for a cardiac concern, as confirmed by his family on Saturday.
Duran, who attained championship titles across four distinct weight divisions, is grappling with a health setback attributed to an atrioventricular blockade, as disclosed by his family through an official statement shared on Duran’s Instagram profile.
“While awaiting comprehensive diagnostic results, we aim to furnish further updates regarding his condition,” the statement iterated. “We express our gratitude to our extended family, friends, and the entire community of supporters who are offering prayers and well wishes.”
Mauricio Sulaiman, the President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), conveyed via social media that Duran is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in his native Panama.
“In unison with his loved ones, the global community extends fervent prayers for his swift and triumphant recovery; he remains a true champion and shall overcome this challenge,” Sulaiman articulated in his post on X.
Interestingly, on March 16, 1974, Roberto Duran sought revenge against his nemesis Esteban De Jesus, who handed him his first loss in a 1972 bout. The rematch took place in Panama City, with both boxers claiming supremacy at 135 pounds, each with an identical 41-1 record.
The atmosphere was electric, with 15,000 fans in attendance, eager to see their hero Duran emerge victorious. The event was an intense affair, with Duran being sent down by De Jesus’ left hook in the opening round, mirroring their first encounter. However, Duran refused to deviate from his aggressive approach, intensifying his attack.
Both fighters exhibited incredible skill, toughness, and heart throughout the match. Despite fatigue setting in, Duran managed to catch his second wind in the second half of the fight. He relentlessly attacked De Jesus, who began to falter under the pressure. In the 11th round, Duran delivered a decisive right hook that forced De Jesus to one knee, unable to continue.
Duran emerged victorious, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest lightweights in history. The rubber match between the two fighters occurred in 1978, with Duran winning via 12th round TKO. Duran went on to dazzle in the welterweight division against fighters like Carlos Palomino and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Tragically, De Jesus contracted AIDS after his boxing career ended and passed away at the age of 38. Despite their fierce rivalry, Duran visited De Jesus on his deathbed, symbolizing the respect and camaraderie shared between the two.
