Boxer Claressa Shields Celebrates Upcoming Biopic Premiere

The remarkable journey of boxing phenomenon Claressa Shields is set to illuminate theaters this Christmas Day in “The Fire Inside,” with rising star Ryan Destiny stepping into the ring to portray the champion star. The film promises to showcase Shields’ extraordinary path from Flint, Michigan to becoming one of boxing’s most dominant forces.

Beginning her boxing journey at age 11 as the sole female presence in her local gym, Shields’ meteoric rise culminated in two Olympic gold medals and multiple world championships across different weight divisions. “I knew I would be the greatest woman boxer in history, I knew that no girl could beat me,” Shields reflected in appearance on Pound 4 Pound podcast. “But I didn’t know the recognition, the respect, the money, the people knowing me, the biopic – I didn’t know this stuff would happen.”

The film, penned by acclaimed writer Barry Jenkins and directed by Rachel Morrison, delves deep into Shields’ formative years and the obstacles she conquered. Shields took an active role as executive producer to ensure authenticity in portraying her life story. “I wanted them to keep the hardcore stuff in there, keep the raw stuff in, because it’s needed,” she explains. “I want the world to really see what I had to experience.”

Veteran actor Brian Tyree Henry brings to life Jason Crutchfield, Shields’ first boxing coach, while Destiny underwent rigorous training to capture the essence of the champion both inside and outside the ring. The unprecedented nature of having a biopic released while still actively competing isn’t lost on Shields: “To have a biopic about your life while you’re number one in the world at what you do is not even heard of. Everybody gets their stuff after they retire. I get my stuff right now.”

Even as her life story heads to theaters, Shields continues to make waves in combat sports. Recently, she made headlines discussing potential matchups, including a possible boxing bout with MMA star Cris Cyborg. While open to facing Cyborg in boxing, Shields candidly acknowledges the vast differences between the two combat disciplines. “Boxing is a more fair sport. How is it more fair? You got your left and your right,” she explains, contrasting it with MMA’s broader arsenal of “left, right, elbows, knees, kicks, the ground game.”

This understanding of the sports’ distinctions has shaped Shields’ career decisions. Despite her success in boxing, she’s spent time training in MMA, dedicating roughly a year to learning disciplines like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, she’s realistic about the time required to master these additional skills, especially when considering matchups against seasoned MMA veterans.

The film’s Christmas Day release offers viewers an intimate look at a champion who continues to break barriers while still writing new chapters in her remarkable story.
