Fedor Emelianenko: I was always representing Sambo in MMA

The legendary Russian mixed martial artist Fedor Emelianenko has reaffirmed his deep connection to his Sambo roots, emphasizing that throughout his illustrious career, he has always considered himself a representative of the Sambo school.

“I have always been and will remain a Sambo practitioner. I love Sambo, Sambo is in my blood, so I don’t separate before, after, left, or came,” Emelianenko stated in new video. “I have always been a Sambo practitioner, even when entering an MMA bout, achieving certain results, I was still a representative of the Sambo school.”

Emelianenko, widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters in MMA history, has consistently credited his background in Sambo for much of his success in the cage. The Russian martial art, which combines elements of judo and wrestling with striking techniques, provided Emelianenko with a unique skill set that proved devastatingly effective throughout his career.

Throughout his prime years in Pride Fighting Championships and other organizations, Emelianenko’s technical proficiency in Sambo was evident in his ground game, throws, and submission abilities. While many fighters transition between different martial arts disciplines throughout their careers, Emelianenko’s comments highlight his unwavering identification with Sambo.

His loyalty to Sambo has also extended beyond his own competition career. Emelianenko has been instrumental in promoting the sport globally, serving as the president of the Russian MMA Union and working to advance combat sports in his home country.

His legacy as one of Sambo’s greatest ambassadors to the wider martial arts world remains firmly established, just as he intended—carrying the banner of Sambo into every arena he entered.
