TYT Founder banishes Contributor after disagreement on trans participation in sports

Cenk Uygur, founder of The Young Turks (TYT) network, has announced the removal of contributor Francesca Fiorentini from the platform following a series of disagreements and personal attacks.

The conflict centered around differing views on transgender athletes’ participation in sports, with Uygur advocating for a nuanced approach that allows transgender girls to compete in high school sports but leaves decisions about college and professional levels to individual leagues. Fiorentini , however, took a more absolutist stance, arguing for unrestricted participation across all levels.

Uygur stated that he supports “100% constitutional rights for transgender Americans” and believes transgender girls should be allowed to compete in girls’ sports at the high school level. However, he does not support mandating transgender athlete participation in college and professional sports, arguing that leagues should make their own decisions at those levels.

“I happen to think that they should be allowed to play. Transgender girls should be allowed to play in women’s and girls’ sports in high school. Now, my position on that is not overall popular in the country, I understand that, and I have a strategy for hopefully how to win on that in the long run. But I don’t believe that they should be mandated to play at the college and professional levels. I think the leagues should get to make those decisions on their own.”

Fiorentini insisted:

“I’m 100% right on this. I don’t give a [expletive] about the scientific explanations. People, if they identify as a woman, get to compete in sports. If that’s not fair in the short term for a variety of little competitions, I don’t give a [expletive].”

Uygur explained that while policy disagreements are normal and welcome within the network, Fiorentini ‘s rhetoric escalated to personal attacks, including calling him a “collaborator” with right-wing forces and questioning his intelligence and integrity. He cited multiple instances where Fiorentini made disparaging comments about him on various platforms.

The TYT founder emphasized that the decision to remove Fiorentini was not solely about their disagreement on trans issues, but rather about maintaining a positive and constructive atmosphere within the network. Uygur stated that TYT aims to build a community with “open minds and open hearts” that can work together despite differences to achieve progressive goals.

Uygur also addressed the broader context of left-wing media and political strategy, arguing for the importance of engaging with diverse viewpoints to win over voters and ultimately pass progressive legislation. He contrasted this approach with what he sees as an unproductive tendency among some on the left to alienate potential allies through personal attacks and ideological purity tests.

While expressing sadness over the situation, Uygur maintained that the decision was necessary to uphold the network’s values and focus on its mission of building a strong progressive media presence to counter right-wing dominance in the political discourse.
