In a fascinating experiment, Mythbusters set out to test whether the iconic weapon-carrying mechanics of DOOM would be feasible in real life. The investigation began with Adam and Jamie attempting to navigate a real-world DOOM-inspired course while progressively collecting and carrying multiple weapons.
Initial tests with the hosts showed promising results. Despite their reasonable fitness levels, both Adam and Jamie struggled significantly under the weight of multiple weapons. Adam attempted to optimize his performance with a utility backpack and equipment slings, but the mass and bulk of the gear eventually took its toll, reducing him to what the show described as “a painful to watch crawl.”
However, the team recognized that the average person isn’t an accurate representation of DOOM’s protagonist. Enter Brendan Schaub, a UFC heavyweight contender standing at 6’4″ and weighing 245 pounds (he’s since started claiming he’s 6’6″), with ‘extensive’ martial arts expertise. Schaub’s physical attributes made him a more appropriate real-world equivalent to DOOM’s protagonist.
Schaub’s performance was remarkable. His initial control run with a single weapon was completed in just four minutes. When testing the full loadout – including nine weapons, three medical kits, and two ammo boxes – Schaub demonstrated extraordinary capabilities. Despite carrying the same equipment that had severely impeded Adam and Jamie, Schaub maintained his speed and efficiency throughout the course.
Perhaps most surprisingly, even while audibly groaning under the weight, Schaub’s completion time remained consistent between his single-weapon and full-loadout runs. The addition of 33 pounds of equipment, including the infamous chainsaw, failed to significantly impact his performance.
The experiment revealed that while carrying multiple weapons would indeed pose a significant challenge for most individuals, an elite athlete of Schaub’s caliber could potentially manage the feat without sacrificing speed or combat effectiveness – lending some credibility to DOOM’s weapon-carrying mechanics.
Brendan Schaub Was One of the Very Few Pundits to Side with Healthcare CEO
Brendan Schaub recently stirred controversy by defending the UnitedHealthcare CEO in a highly debated incident, positioning himself against the broader criticisms of systemic healthcare issues. While public figures like Bill Burr and Joe Rogan highlighted the exploitative practices of insurance companies, Schaub took a personal approach, attributing the shooter’s motivations to pain and personal suffering rather than systemic failings.
He dismissed discussions of corporate malfeasance, emphasizing the shooter’s reported back injury and intimacy struggles. This narrow focus drew backlash for oversimplifying the issue and sidestepping larger societal concerns. Known for his unconventional opinions, Schaub’s stance reflects his pattern of prioritizing personal narratives over institutional critiques, sparking further debate about his commentary’s relevance and impact.
