PFL’s Daiane Silva is regaining consciousness after spending a month in coma due to a bad weight cut causing kidney failure

Brazilian mixed martial artist Daiane Silva is showing signs of improvement after a harrowing month-long ordeal that left the sporting world deeply concerned. The 29-year-old fighter, known affectionately as “Leidy Dai,” is gradually regaining consciousness following complications that arose during her preparation for a scheduled bout in London last September.

Silva, an undefeated prospect with a promising 3-0 record, was set to make her debut in the featherweight division (145 lbs) at a Bellator Champion Series event. However, tragedy struck on the day of the weigh-in, leading to her immediate hospitalization and placement in an induced coma.

Mike Mazzulli, director of the Mohegan Sun Athletic Commission overseeing the event, recounted the tense moments leading up to Silva’s hospitalization. “She was the last scheduled fighter to the scale, though she never weighed in,” Mazzulli explained. “I sent a doctor up, and about half an hour later, the doctor said she was being sent to the hospital.”

The incident has sparked renewed discussions about athlete safety and the potential risks associated with extreme weight management practices in combat sports. Silva, who previously competed at 155 lbs and even secured a championship title in Brazil, was attempting her first cut to the featherweight class when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Friends, fans, and fellow athletes have rallied around Silva, offering words of encouragement and support through social media. The MMA community stands united in hoping for her full recovery.

Cris Cyborg, a legendary figure in the sport, spoke about Silva’s situation at a recent post-fight press conference. “It’s really, really sad,” Cyborg said. “I know when you have a tough preparation, it’s the responsibility of you, your trainers, and coaches around you. I think it has to be done safely and in agreement with the event.”

Cyborg emphasized the importance of following safety protocols and adhering to agreements made with event organizers. She called for prayers and support for Silva’s recovery, adding, “We just pray for her, hopefully she recovers fast. I know she’s in a bad situation, but we pray for her and support her so she can come back home soon.”
