Cain Velasquez receives support as he awaits sentencing after pleading down attempted murder

As the former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez awaits his sentencing hearing in October for the attempted murder and assault charges he faced earlier this year, some of his peers in the MMA community have stepped up to show their support.

Former UFC welterweight contender Jake Shields expressed his belief that Velasquez “did nothing wrong” and should be set free. Shields, known for his outspokenness on sensitive issues in the sport, firmly stands by Velasquez’s side during this challenging time.

Additionally, UFC middleweight Derek Brunson has also voiced his backing for Velasquez. Brunson has been actively rekindling the “#FreeCain” movement, making it clear that he stands with the former champion as he faces one of the toughest situations of his life.

Velasquez’s legal troubles stem from a February 2022 shooting incident in San Jose, California, where he was charged with attempted murder, assault, and weapons-related offenses. However, the 42-year-old has since opted to take a no-contest plea, which will result in the premeditated murder charges being dropped.

This move was made in an effort to significantly reduce Velasquez’s potential sentence and avoid the possibility of life imprisonment. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 18th, although the actual sentencing date may be set at a later time.

Despite the legal challenges he faces, Velasquez has found support from his fellow UFC veterans, who believe that justice has not been served in his case. As he awaits his final sentencing, Velasquez can take solace in knowing that he has the backing of his peers as he navigates through this difficult period in his life.
