That Time Tom Aspinall Broke His Opponent’s Leg Checking a Kick

Four years ago, on a fateful night in Liverpool, English star Tom Aspinall faced off against his French opponent, Sofiane Boukichou, in a Cage Warriors 101 event. Little did they know that the bout would take a tragic turn, etching a moment in MMA history that still resonates today.

The fight began with Boukichou attempting to land a kick on Aspinall. However, Aspinall’s lightning-quick reflexes and expert technique proved to be the undoing of his foe. As Boukichou’s leg connected with Aspinall’s block, a sickening crack echoed through the arena, signaling the horrific injury that was about to unfold.

Boukichou’s leg snapped, and the appendage dangled at an unnatural angle, eliciting gasps and groans from the stunned crowd. The Frenchman immediately crumpled to the floor, his ankle flailing to the side as the severity of the injury became abundantly clear.

Aspinall, displaying admirable sportsmanship, immediately walked away, unwilling to attack his prone opponent. The referee quickly rushed to Boukichou’s aid, and the fighters were left to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating incident.

In the aftermath, the video of the leg break was shared on social media, where viewers expressed their sympathies and support for Boukichou. Aspinall, too, was praised for his gentlemanly conduct and his impressive technique in blocking the kick.

“Not the way Tom would have wanted the fight to end. But shown himself to be a gentleman and a true sportsman as well as an athlete and fighter,” one viewer commented.

Another praised Aspinall’s blocking ability, noting, “A bit of credit, that was great technique and reaction on the check. Cat like. Wasn’t even that telegraphed.”

The unfortunate incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and dangers inherent in the sport of MMA. While the fight was cut short in the most undesirable manner, the actions and sportsmanship displayed by Aspinall in the aftermath have earned him the respect of fans and fellow fighters alike.

This is especially interesting considering Aspinall is seen as one of the only two men that could stop Alex Pereira’s attempt to permanently etch his name in MMA history. Pereira has been ripping through the light heavyweight division which has no disciplined stars that are adept at checking leg kicks and as such at a significant disadvantage against him. Judging by this clip, Aspinall is not one of them. Whether the UFC greenlights the clash between the two stars is a whole other issue but it’s certainly an intriguing prospect.
