During a recent podcast episode, Joe Rogan found himself at the center of a debate about artificial intelligence and misinformation when he enthusiastically promoted what turned out to be a fake video of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
The controversial moment began when Rogan and his guest were discussing politicians who become “liabilities” after election cycles end. The conversation turned to Walz, with Rogan asking if his guest had seen a video showing the former vice presidential candidate wearing a profanity-laden anti-Trump shirt while dancing in an elevator.
“Did you see where he had a F*ck Trump shirt on? And he’s dancing and going down an elevator? Have you seen this video?” Rogan asked, before instructing his producer Jamie to find and display the clip.
What followed was a fascinating real-time demonstration of how even media-savvy individuals can fall victim to AI-generated content. As the video played, Rogan’s producer and guest immediately recognized it as artificial intelligence-generated content, but the podcast host remained steadfast in his belief that it was authentic.
“Is that really him?” someone asked, to which Rogan responded definitively: “Yes.”
Despite multiple attempts from those around him to explain that the video was fake, Rogan continued to insist on its authenticity. “No, it’s not real,” his guest said. “Yes, it is,” Rogan countered.
The back-and-forth continued with increasing intensity, with Rogan declaring, “It’s got to be real. It has to be real,” even as others in the room pointed out obvious signs of AI manipulation.
When finally confronted with clear evidence that the video was artificially generated, including text explicitly labeling it as AI-created content, Rogan’s response was telling. Rather than acknowledge his error, he doubled down with a philosophical defense of his position.
“I fell for it, too. And do you know why I fell for it?” Rogan said. “Because I believe that he’s capable of doing something that’s dumb. But that’s his essence.”
