29-year-old Daiane Silva has been in a coma for almost a month after a failed weight cut for her Bellator/PFL debut

The mixed martial arts community has been left reeling following news of Daiane “Leidy Dai” Silva’s hospitalization. The 29-year-old Brazilian athlete remains in a coma in London after experiencing complications during her weight cut for a scheduled debut with Bellator/PFL on September 14.

It’s very interesting that PFL has been able to keep this under wraps for over a month. Neither social media for Silva nor her manager made public statements online.

Silva, an undefeated prospect with a 3-0 record, had previously competed at 155 pounds, even securing a championship title in her native Brazil. This marked her first attempt to drop down to the 145-pound weight class for a match against Eman Almudhaf when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Known for her exceptional skills and humble demeanor, Silva had shared her aspirations with WMMA Rankings prior to this tragic event. The organization expressed their devastation upon learning of her condition and joined the chorus of voices hoping for her full recovery.

The news of Silva’s condition was first made public by Nacao Cyborg, a promotion in Brazil led by legendary star Cris Cyborg. Their statement, released over a month after the incident, brought to light a situation that had remained largely unknown to the public and many within the MMA community.

Silva’s talent was on full display during her last appearance in the cage at Iron Man MMA 26 on November 17, 2023. There, she captured the 155-pound lightweight title with an impressive first-round victory, showcasing her dominance on the ground.

The incident has reignited discussions about athlete safety and the potential risks associated with extreme weight cutting practices in combat sports. As Silva continues to receive medical care in London, the MMA world stands united in support of the young athlete, hoping for positive news regarding her condition.

Friends, fans, and fellow stars have taken to social media to express their concern and offer words of encouragement for Silva and her family during this challenging time.

WMMA rankings was the first to report on the tragic news.

Cyborg, speaking at the post-fight press conference, expressed her sadness over Silva’s situation. “It’s really, really sad,” she said. “I know when you have a tough cut, it’s responsible for you, your trainers, and coaches around you. I think it has to be cut safe and make an agreement with the event.”

The champion emphasized the importance of following safety protocols and agreements made with event organizers. She criticized corners that don’t adhere to these rules, highlighting the potential dangers of extreme weight cutting.

Cyborg, who has faced her own challenges with weight cuts throughout her career, called for prayers and support for Silva’s recovery. “We just pray for her, hopefully she recovers fast. I know she’s in a bad situation, but we pray for her and support her so she can come back home soon,” she added.
