The internet’s latest drama involves comedian Shane Gillis finding himself in an unexpected feud with self-proclaimed “alpha male” Ali. He is a wannabe tough guy who fits the mold of other cringe-worthy masculine influencers flooding social media.
The whole situation began when comedians Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast started following and mocking various fake alpha male personalities like Wes Watson and Ben Azoulay. These characters have become a cottage industry of manufactured masculinity, all delivering the same tired content about being the “strongest” and most “alpha” while desperately trying to sound intimidating on podcasts.
Ali emerged as another clone in this assembly line of pseudo-tough guys, positioning himself as what one observer called “the Muslim version” of Ben Azoulay. The drama escalated when Ali and Ben got into their own beef over perceived disrespect, leading to a pathetically anticlimactic confrontation that ended with little more than a light push after lots of posturing about who was the real “king.”
Ali Sobh was supposed to do a combat sports challenge against Azoulay but after Azoulay’s history was unearthed the event was scrapped.
Shane Gillis and his podcast partner Matt found the whole spectacle hilarious, discussing it during a Patreon episode where they mocked the absurdity of these grown men arguing about who’s more alpha. Shane’s commentary was particularly cutting, noting how these guys claim to command respect when entering rooms, but in reality would just come across as attention-seeking wannabes.
The situation took a personal turn when Ali discovered Shane’s mockery and decided to issue a challenge. In typical alpha male fashion, Ali made a response video calling Shane a “coward” for talking negatively about someone not in the room, while simultaneously doing exactly that by insulting Shane.
The irony was lost on Ali, who then proposed a strange bet: he’d pay for his own plane ticket to appear on their show if he couldn’t make Shane “eat those words,” but Shane would have to pay if Ali succeeded in getting an apology.
The fact that Ali’s challenge video became his most-viewed content speaks to the parasitic relationship these influencers have with actual entertainers.
