At the Santa Clara Tournament this weekend, Southern Utah University’s women’s volleyball team has opted out of their scheduled match against San Jose State University. The decision has sparked discussions about inclusivity and fairness in women’s sports.
The tournament, featuring four women’s volleyball programs including Southern Utah, San Jose State, Santa Clara, and Fresno State, was set to showcase competitive matches between these teams. However, Southern Utah’s last-minute withdrawal from their game against San Jose State has raised questions about the underlying reasons.
San Jose State’s team includes player Blaire Fleming, who has been a prominent contributor to their undefeated 5-0 season. Fleming was recently named to the All-Tournament Team at the Hawkeye Invitational, demonstrating strong performance on the court.
When asked about the cancellation, Southern Utah University provided a statement saying, “The Southern Utah University volleyball team has opted to compete in just two non-conference games at the Santa Clara Tournament this weekend. The Thunderbirds are eager to make the most of these matches and continue building momentum for a successful season.”
The university did not provide specific reasons for the cancellation, leaving room for speculation. Some observers, including Riley Gaines, host of the OutKick podcast “Gaines for Girls,” have suggested that the decision may be related to concerns about fair competition and safety in women’s sports.
This incident has reignited discussions about the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. It follows previous instances where athletes have spoken out about competing against transgender individuals, such as former Southern Utah Track & Field athlete Madison DeBos, who faced a similar situation in a competition against the University of Montana.
San Jose State University, when approached for comment on the matter, stated that certain student information is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Despite the cancellation, the tournament continues with other scheduled matches. Southern Utah played two matches on Friday, losing to Fresno State before securing a victory against host Santa Clara. San Jose State is set to face Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon in their only match of the invitational.
