UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev has sparked controversy after dismissing the BMF title, calling it “for the bums.” In an interview with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, Makhachev expressed his disinterest in the belt, when it was set to be contested by Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 in July.
Makhachev’s comments resurfaced in light of his impressive win at UFC 302. However, the Russian has made it clear that he has no desire to compete for the belt, which he believes is reserved for stars who are not championship material.
“Honestly, this belt’s for the bums,” Makhachev said. “First time who fought for this belt? Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Two people who never can be champion, you know?”
Makhachev’s comments are likely to ruffle feathers, particularly among Poirier and Gaethje, who are set to face off for the belt in July. However, the UFC Lightweight Champion is unapologetic, stating that he would not accept the BMF title even if it were offered to him.
“Honestly, if somebody gives me this belt tomorrow, I don’t want this sh*t,” Makhachev said. “And that’s it. I can beat these guys easy.”
