UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev has sparked controversy after dismissing the BMF title, calling it “for the bums.” In an interview with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, Makhachev expressed his disinterest in the belt, when it was set to be contested by Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 in July.
Makhachev’s comments resurfaced in light of his impressive win at UFC 302. However, the Russian has made it clear that he has no desire to compete for the belt, which he believes is reserved for stars who are not championship material.
“Honestly, this belt’s for the bums,” Makhachev said. “First time who fought for this belt? Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Two people who never can be champion, you know?”
Makhachev’s comments are likely to ruffle feathers, particularly among Poirier and Gaethje, who are set to face off for the belt in July. However, the UFC Lightweight Champion is unapologetic, stating that he would not accept the BMF title even if it were offered to him.
“Honestly, if somebody gives me this belt tomorrow, I don’t want this sh*t,” Makhachev said. “And that’s it. I can beat these guys easy.”
At the UFC 302 post-fight press conference, Dana White hinted at ongoing negotiations for the next BMF (Baddest Motherf**ker) title fight involving Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway. Despite Islam Makhachev’s fifth-round submission victory over Dustin Poirier, White dismissed the idea of the lightweight champion challenging Holloway for the BMF belt, confirming that discussions have started to determine Holloway’s next opponent.
White’s comments suggest that the UFC is actively planning the next BMF title fight, following Holloway’s dramatic capture of the silver-plated strap at UFC 300. He expressed enthusiasm for the BMF title, indicating that fighters are eager to compete for it. White mentioned upcoming events at The Sphere and Madison Square Garden, hinting that Holloway’s next fight might be scheduled around those high-profile dates.
Potential opponents for Holloway include Ilia Topuria, who has shown interest in the BMF title, and possibly Conor McGregor, should he defeat Michael Chandler in their upcoming bout. Another speculated match is a rematch with Dustin Poirier, who expressed respect for Holloway when asked about a potential BMF title fight following his loss to Makhachev.
While specific details and dates for Holloway’s next fight remain undecided, the UFC’s plans for the BMF title are generating significant interest and speculation among fans and fighters alike.
