(Video) UFC Champion Dricus Du Plessis Shares Awkward Encounter with Brendan Allan

UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis recently shared a funny story about an awkward encounter he had with fellow UFC star Brendan Allan.

According to Du Plessis, he and Allan were at a function together and Du Plessis, being a friendly South African, tried to break the ice with some light-hearted banter. However, Allan wasn’t engaging much in conversation, being focused on his phone.

Seeing a tattoo with a date on Allan’s shoulder, Du Plessis jokingly asked if the numbers represented Allan’s MMA record, with 2 wins and 7 losses. The joke drew some laughs from others at the table, as it seemed like a plausible assumption that a star might have his record tattooed on himself.

But Allan looked up from his phone and tersely replied that the date was actually his daughter’s birthday. An awkward silence fell over the table as Du Plessis realized his quip had missed the mark.

Ever the good sport, Du Plessis laughed it off, saying the joke writes itself and that he didn’t mean anything by it, he had simply misinterpreted the tattoo.

While the encounter was a bit cringeworthy, it provided Du Plessis with an amusing anecdote to share. The champ showed he has a good sense of humor about making conversation faux pas, especially when his attempts at friendly joking go awry.

Following his thrilling fifth-round victory against Sean Strickland, Dricus Du Plessis admitted to sustaining significant damage during the fight. This case a doubt over whether he’d be able to defend at UFC 300 as some speculated.

Du Plessis revealed that despite not requiring stitches, the bout left him more battered than ever before, with severe swelling around his eyes and bruising across his face.

The swelling and bruising were so severe that Du Plessis’ face was nearly unrecognizable, with gruesome hematomas protruding over both eyes. Du Plessis humorously mentioned that the swelling and bruising were so extreme that facial recognition on his phone didn’t work properly.

Despite the physical toll, Du Plessis considered the damage a small price to pay for realizing his lifelong dream of becoming a UFC champion. His victory in front of a passionate crowd marked the culmination of his meteoric rise to the top of the UFC middleweight division.
