During Sunday’s matchup between the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat, what started as routine inbound play escalated into an unexpected physical altercation with 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
With the Rockets trailing by five points, tension peaked when Rockets rookie Amen Thompson and Heat guard Tyler Herro became entangled, each gripping the other’s jersey. The situation intensified as Thompson executed what judo practitioners might recognize as a sumi-otoshi technique, bringing Herro to the ground.
The incident sparked immediate reaction from both benches, with players and coaching staff rushing onto the court. Officials were forced to intervene, ultimately ejecting six individuals: Thompson, Herro, Rockets guard Jalen Green, Heat guard Terry Rozier, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, and Rockets assistant Ben Sullivan.
Speaking to reporters post-game, Coach Udoka offered his perspective on the incident. “I didn’t see a lot, but I rewatched it,” he explained. “They were in each other’s faces, bumping chests a little bit. One guy is stronger than the other.”
The Heat went on to secure victory in the contest, though the closing moments overshadowed the game’s basketball action. The NBA is expected to review the incident, with potential disciplinary measures pending for those involved.
