Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has stirred controversy with recent comments about LGBTQ+ representation in sports and religious expression. During a public appearance, the undefeated champion questioned the prevalence of rainbow flags in sports, particularly in football (soccer).
“Lot of these crazy people, even in football, they wear this [LGBT] flag, crazy people flag, they promote this [flag]. Why can we not promote our faith? Why can’t we promote what we believe?” Nurmagomedov stated.
The Dagestani athlete’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about inclusivity in sports. Earlier, Nurmagomedov had made headlines discussing cultural differences between his homeland and the United States, particularly regarding gender identity.
During a Las Vegas event, he shared his experience with gender-neutral bathrooms in California, saying, “I only know men and women. There’s nothing in between. It’s crazy. A few weeks ago, I was in California, and I went to a cafe. I wanted to go to the bathroom. They showed me where to go. I go upstairs and there are two doors that say ‘For all genders.'”
The 29-0 retired champion has consistently maintained his traditional views, rooted in his upbringing in Dagestan. Recently, he declined an invitation from Elon Musk for grappling training, choosing to focus on his coaching career instead.
During a Q&A session in England, Nurmagomedov emphasized the importance of his values, stating, “I feel like around the world (there is a) big support for my people, who have the same views I have. And I really believe that here everybody has the same views. And please, take care of your kids. This is our future. And that’s important.”
His latest comments have sparked debate on social media platforms about the balance between religious expression and LGBTQ+ representation in professional sports.
