(VIdeo) Karate ‘talent’ destroys himself in funny demo

In a cringe-worthy moment, 32-year-old karate black belt Sudarshana Deshappriya’s audition on Sri Lanka’s Got Talent went dramatically off-script when a demonstration of his martial arts prowess led to an unexpected self-knockout.

Deshappriya, who reportedly has a disability and had to work twice as hard as others to achieve his black belt status, began his performance with impressive displays of physical endurance. Despite limited financial resources, this community volunteer was determined to showcase his skills to a national audience.

The demonstration started boldly with Deshappriya dropping into full splits over upward-pointing nails. His students then hoisted him onto two cross-sections of tree trunk on a platform, breaking various objects over his body.

Then came the moment that had audiences gasping. In an attempt to demonstrate his strength and pain tolerance, Deshappriya took a clay tile and smashed it against his own forehead. The impact sent him flipping backward, causing him to land directly on the back of his head.

Stunned but undeterred, and showing possible signs of concussion, Deshappriya was helped to his feet by his dojo students. Still disoriented, he staggered forward and attempted to continue his performance by breaking more bricks while dropping into a split.

The judges, concerned for his safety, intervened. Judge Jackson Anthony, a renowned actor in Sri Lanka, stepped in to stop the performance.

“We respect your strength, and we love that strength,” Anthony told Deshappriya. “That’s why we stopped it. You are talented – a warrior – and this is enough to prove that.”

Former cricket star Tillakaratne Dilshan, another judge, added: “There are ups and downs at any given time, but you tried hard to achieve your target, and I appreciate that, and I’m happy you stood back up and tried to complete your act.”

Musician Soundarie David Rodrigo also expressed admiration for Deshappriya’s resilience: “I applaud the fact that you got back up. … My verdict is ‘yes,'” adding, “but please be careful.”

Despite the painful mishap, Deshappriya’s determination impressed the judges so much that he unanimously advanced to the next round after Anthony changed his initial “no” vote to a “yes.”

The “Got Talent” franchise, which airs in over 65 countries including Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Myanmar, has seen its share of unusual performances, but Deshappriya’s combination of martial arts skill, unfortunate accident, and indomitable spirit certainly stands out as one of the most memorable.
