A while ago, Vice went viral with an article outlining a disturbing trend: neo-Nazi combat sports tournaments, including MMA and grappling events, have become tools for white nationalist groups in the U.S. and Europe to build networks, raise funds, and foster community under the guise of athletic competition. These events, such as the “Birth of a New Frontier” in California and the “Martyr’s Day Rumble” in Washington, allegedly serve as gathering points to connect, strategize, and promote their ideology. Spearheaded by figures like Robert Rundo, who seeks to establish a “parallel society” through decentralized “active clubs,” these events echo tactics used in far-right music festivals to normalize hate-based activities. Experts warn of their growing presence and emphasize the need for heightened awareness to prevent public venues and gyms from unwittingly hosting such gatherings. Far from being mere sports, these tournaments are platforms for ideological recruitment, community-building, and the propagation of white supremacist agendas.
Jake Shields and Patriot Front’s Thomas Rousseau
Recently, former MMA champion Jake Shields invited Thomas Rousseau, the leader of the white nationalist group Patriot Front, onto his podcast. Before the interview, Shields revealed he trained Brazilian jiu jitsu with members of Patriot Front, an organization known for its focus on physical fitness and martial arts. Shields commented on the session, saying, “We trained and stuff earlier… he asked me ‘hey can I bring my guys to work out with you?’ World Championship fighter… we did a bunch of technique and some of the guys actually did train with me.” He described the Patriot Front members as “fit” and “decent” at martial arts.
Rousseau confirmed the training session, adding, “We’ve been doing that with jiu jitsu, we’ve been doing that through boxing.” This collaboration between Shields and a group designated as an extremist organization by the Anti-Defamation League has raised concerns about integrating hate groups in the jiu-jitsu community.
Patriot Front’s Emphasis on Self-Improvement
Patriot Front places a strong emphasis on physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and personal discipline. During his podcast appearance, Rousseau explained, “Members can join the organization while being out of shape or having poor lifestyle habits, but they cannot remain that way.” The organization applies constant pressure on members to improve themselves physically and mentally, promoting martial arts training, boxing, and fitness as key components of their regimen. Shields noted, “Patriot Front members are encouraged to improve themselves through martial arts, exercise, and other self-improvement.”
The organization’s focus on physical fitness is part of a broader push for self-improvement. Rousseau highlighted how members are encouraged to enhance various aspects of their lives, including education and career advancement. “The group provides structure and community to help men achieve higher standards,” he said. Members hold each other accountable, encourage one another to read more, work out more, and maintain healthy diets. According to Rousseau, this accountability extends to personal conduct, with the goal of fostering strong individuals who can contribute to what they consider a stronger community.
Martial Arts as a Tool for Community and Ideology
Rousseau emphasized the role of martial arts in fostering camaraderie and discipline. He stated, “Martial arts training serves multiple purposes – building physical fitness, fostering brotherhood, and developing mental discipline.” This focus aligns with the group’s broader goals of instilling what Rousseau describes as “traditional values” in its members. He added that combat sports gyms often function as masculine spaces that preserve traditional forms of conflict resolution and honest communication between men.
During the podcast, Rousseau argued that martial arts environments foster open dialogue and free speech. “I think martial arts is a institution Community sort of space whether it’s business or social which is naturally predisposed towards the um practice of free speech,” he said. He suggested that disagreements within these spaces can often be resolved through conversation or physical sparring, reinforcing bonds of brotherhood.
Shields already claimed censorship when he platformed a convicted H0locaust Denier
Jake Shields has accused major platforms like Spotify and YouTube of censorship after an episode featuring German Rudolf was removed, framing it as an attack on free speech. He has also spoken about challenges with Twitter shadowbanning under previous management, crediting Elon Musk’s acquisition for increasing his follower count and improving platform openness, despite continued issues like demonetization. Shields has emphasized financial independence through sponsorships and business ventures during his MMA career, advocating for athletes to diversify income streams. While Shields continues to champion free speech, his polarizing guest choices continue to make waves.
