UFC PED Tzar brands Makhachev’s Positive Test from 2016 a ‘Colossal Mistake’

Islam Makhachev stands as a formidable force in the 155-pound division. His mastery in wrestling allows him to overpower elite opponents with apparent ease, often raising eyebrows in the process.

However, this dominance has also attracted scrutiny and allegations. Notably, former opponents like longtime UFC veteran Bobby Green have claimed that Makhachev might be using PEDs. Similarly, Dan Hooker has accused Makhachev of using IVs for rehydration. This is a practice that can potentially mask PED usage.

Makhachev’s reputation took a hit when he encountered issues with the UFC’s previous testing agency, USADA. In 2016, an out-of-competition test flagged Makhachev for meldonium. The incident resulted in a three-month suspension despite a quick ruling of “no fault or negligence.”

This incident has left a lasting mark on Makhachev’s career. However, recent developments suggest a brighter outlook. Eight years after the controversy, Makhachev has earned a place in the Ugly Jacket Club. It is a recognition for fighters who have passed 50 drug tests without any violations.

Jeff Novitzky is the UFC Senior Vice President of PED Compliance. He has stepped forward to vindicate Makhachev regarding the 2016 incident.

Novitzky has pointed fingers at USADA for the mishap, explaining that meldonium was added to the prohibited list in 2016 after being previously allowed. Makhachev had used the substance following a medical procedure in 2014, and he had documented this use. Despite being cleared by USADA, the damage to his reputation was significant.

With the UFC’s transition to Combat Sports Anti-Doping for their testing program, there is hope for fewer errors and a cleaner sport.
