UFC Legend Matt Serra Thinks Fighter Serving Life in Prison Could’ve Been Saved

In a recent podcast appearance on JRE MMA companion, UFC Hall of Famer Matt Serra opened up about the tragic downfall of Jon Koppenhaver, better known as “War Machine,” a former contestant on TUF reality show.

Serra, who coached Koppenhaver during Season 6 of the popular MMA series, expressed his deep sadness over the path his former pupil’s life took. “It just depressed me. It just brought me down,” Serra confided, reflecting on a recent interview he gave for a documentary about Koppenhaver’s story.

The former UFC welterweight champion painted a picture of a complex individual, describing Koppenhaver as “goofy” and “emotional” during his time on the show. “He was a prankster… a silly guy,” Serra recalled, hinting at a lighter side to the troubled fighter’s personality.

However, Serra also acknowledged Koppenhaver’s struggles, noting that he “always thought the cards were stacked against him.” This insight provides a glimpse into the mindset of a man who would later face serious legal troubles.

In 2014, Koppenhaver was involved in an incident with his ex-girlfriend, adult film actress Christy Mack, and her companion Corey Thomas. The altercation led to multiple felony charges, resulting in Koppenhaver receiving a life sentence with the possibility of parole in 2053.

Serra expressed his belief that Koppenhaver’s fate might have been different with proper guidance. “I thought that if he had the right people around him, he obviously would’ve made a lot better choices,” the UFC veteran mused.

The conversation took a somber turn as Serra discussed the importance of one’s social circle. He pointed out that the only person to support Koppenhaver at his trial was Phil Baroni, whom Serra described in unfavorable terms.

“You show me your friends, you show me who you are,” Serra remarked, suggesting that Koppenhaver’s associations may have contributed to his downward spiral.

Interestingly, Former UFC star Phil Baroni was arrested in Mexico in 2023 for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, a case confirmed by major news outlets. Baroni admits to an argument over infidelity, during which he claims he accidentally killed her by throwing her into a shower, causing fatal head injuries. After leaving to go to a grocery store, he found her unconscious and flagged down police, who discovered her body with multiple signs of beatings. Baroni, now held in a state prison in Tepic, faces a potential 30-50 year sentence if found guilty.

Despite the grim outcome, Serra maintained that there was potential for a different path. “I thought there was some hope,” he said, his words tinged with regret for what might have been.

Joe Rogan added he even had Koppenhaver on his podcast back in the day. The episode which has been wiped out of the JRE catalogue but still exist on the internet is among the Top 5 Joe Rogan Experience Episodes That Aged the Worst.

War Machine’s troubling story made for a very compelling hour long documentary on the famed Jim Can’t Swim criminal psychology channel.
