Trans cyclist takes third and wins a cash prize at Road Race in the women’s division

In a contentious outcome at yesterday’s Mason Lake Road Race, cyclist Claire Law secured third place in the women’s 1/2/3 division, earning both a USA Cycling upgrade point and prize money.

The competition, which offered a nonbinary category as an alternative option, became the center of debate when Law opted to participate in the women’s division instead.

Images shared on social media showed Law appearing pleased with the third-place finish. The result has sparked discussion within cycling communities about competitive categories in the sport.

Critics on social media have raised concerns about fairness in women’s competitive cycling. One user commented, “Until the real biological women refuse to race with psychopath trans men, it will never end,” while another asked, “Who is permitting men to compete in women’s athletics?”

Some observers directed their questions toward USA Cycling’s leadership, with one commenter noting, “Brendan Quirk is president and CSO of USA Cycling. He could stop this if he wanted to.”

The controversy reflects broader ongoing debates about competition categories in cycling and other sports, with some questioning if existing policies adequately address competitive balance.

The Mason Lake Road Race continues to be a notable event in the regional cycling calendar, though this year’s competition may be remembered more for the discussions it generated than for the race itself.
