Tom Aspinall reveals spiritual aspect to MMA: You need to be willing to die in there

Interim champion Tom Aspinall has opened up about the deeper philosophical dimensions of mixed martial arts while expressing growing frustration over his potential matchup with Jon Jones.

“I’m well bored of the [the Jon Jones Conversation]. I’ve had enough. We either need to fight, or I need to move on to something else,” Aspinall stated during a recent appearance on the High Performance podcast.

“I’m going to get a bit weird and say the spiritual aspect because there is a spiritual aspect to it,” Aspinall explained. “I love everything about it and it would be a shame for me to love something that much and walk away from it for financial reasons or whatever.”

When pressed about what he meant by the spiritual component, Aspinall clarified that he wasn’t referring to religious beliefs.

“When I’m talking about spiritual, I’m not talking about like God or any religious stuff,” he said. “I’m talking about you need to get into a space mentally—and this is going to sound really brutal—where you’re willing to die in there.”

The British heavyweight champion acknowledged that such statements might sound extreme to casual observers but insisted on their authenticity.

“People will be watching this and thinking this guy is over-exaggerating a little bit, but that is seriously the space you need to be when that door closes,” Aspinall continued. “You need to be willing to die. I’m not saying it for clicks. I’m not saying it to over-exaggerate and make myself look like some intense person that I’m not, but that is the reality of it.”

This philosophical glimpse into Aspinall‘s mindset comes amid ongoing frustrations regarding a potential showdown with current UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. Despite UFC President Dana White‘s confidence that the fight will happen in 2025, Aspinall has grown impatient with the uncertainty.

The British star has established himself as the longest-reigning interim champion in UFC history. He captured the interim title by defeating Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295 in November 2023 and successfully defended it against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024.

Aspinall publicly called out Jones following his victory over Blaydes, but “Bones” has yet to respond to the challenge. As fans eagerly await news of this potential super-fight, Aspinall continues to demonstrate not only his physical prowess but also a profound understanding of the mental demands of championship-level competition.
